Title of Thesis:

I am reading for a PhD in the Faculty of Music. My work is focussed on early medieval ideas about music. Specifically, I will consider the annotations entered into the margins and between the lines of Boethius's De institutione musica and Martianus Capella's De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii by "i2", a scholar who can be placed within the close circle of John Scottus Eriugena. Intellectual engagement with music in the ninth century was a luminous tapestry in which strands of inherited late-antique harmonic and grammatical theory were woven around the medieval organisation of liturgical song. It is hoped that my work might help untangle even one corner of this scene.

Between 2011 and 2014 I read for a BA in Music at the University of Oxford, for which I was awarded a first class degree and the Gibbs prize. I have since completed an MSt, also at Oxford, which was funded by an AHRC studentship.
