Are there people who use social media in ways which inspire, challenge or engage you? Want to organise an event or activity where other PhD students in the Arts and Humanities can learn from social media practitioners outside academia how to...
- organise a social media publicity campaign
- crowdsource volunteers for a project
- create video or graphics which will grab attention online
- create a collective blog
- analyse interactions with online audiences
- assess the credibility of social media sources
- run effective meetings in a virtual world?
Or want to share any other examples of social media practice which will benefit PhD students in the Arts and Humanities who want to make use of social media to shape their online presence as researchers?
With funding from the Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership, the Social Media Knowledge Exchange is offering up to three small grants of £500 for Cambridge PhD students to work with us to organise knowledge exchange events and activities in Cambridge before the end of September 2015.
Funds may be spent on travel, accommodation and subsistence, facilitation fees, publicity, catering or other expenses related to organising the event, including visits to meet social media practitioners outside academia and/or attend relevant events, provided the results of these visits are also communicated back to other PhD students via a Cambridge-based event. The core target audience for activities funded by this scheme should be students funded through the Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership and other Cambridge PhD students in the Arts and Humanities. Please note, this funding cannot be used to pay for items of equipment or attendance at academic conferences or scholarly events. If a particular item of equipment or software is crucial to your proposal please get in touch with us for advice in advance.
Who can apply?
- Any PhD students currently registered at the University of Cambridge are eligible to apply for funding. (PhD students funded through the Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership will be given priority for funding if their applications are judged worthy of support.)
Are there any special conditions?
- Applicants need to demonstrate that their event will be relevant to Arts and Humanities PhD students funded through the Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership in the first instance, though other PhD students and early career researchers are also welcome to participate.
- Applicants funded through the Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership will be given priority for support among applications which are judged to merit funding.
- Applicants need to include (or send separately by e-mail) a brief letter of support from their PhD supervisor stating that (s)he is happy for the proposal to be considered.

- Applicants will be notified of the results of the competition by Friday 20 February 2015.
